Mastering the Old Fashioned

Few cocktails boast a history as rich and enduring as the Old Fashioned. From its humble beginnings in 1806 to its modern twists, this iconic drink has stood the test of time, representing the perfect blend of simplicity and sophistication. At Bank+Vine, we celebrated the legacy of the Old Fashioned with an interactive event that showcased its evolution, from the original recipe to our house favorites.

The Original 1806 Recipe

The Old Fashioned traces its roots to the early 19th century, where simplicity was king. The original recipe called for:

Spirit: Bourbon or Rye Whiskey

Sweetener: A sugar cube

Bitters: Angostura bitters

Water: A splash, often in the form of ice

This minimalist approach highlighted the purity of the whiskey, creating a drink that’s both timeless and elegant.

Post-Prohibition Creativity

As the Old Fashioned gained popularity, bartenders began experimenting, incorporating muddled fruits like orange slices and cherries. While some purists resisted these additions, the variations brought new life to the cocktail, ensuring its relevance across generations.

Modern Twists: Make-A-Fire and The Arsonist

At Bank+Vine, we honor tradition while embracing creativity. Our modern takes on the Old Fashioned include:

Make-A-Fire: A smokier version with infused flavors that elevate the original profile.

The Arsonist: Our signature cocktail, presented in a dramatic wood-smoked box, offers a theatrical experience that delights the senses.
